5 Steps to Avoid a Basement Flood

All it takes is one soaking rainstorm, and the prized possessions you keep in your basement – from your kids’ memorabilia to your drum kit – can be ruined in a flash. Not to mention the damage done to your home.

When it comes to basement flooding, the best defense is a good offense. Follow these five strategies from the experts at Roto-Rooter to avoid the damage and heartache of a flood:

Keep your floor drains clean. Floor drains help prevent flooding and other types of water damage, but they can become clogged with dirt and debris, which blocks pipes when water gets into your basement. Make sure these drains are free and clear to let any water that gets in flow through.

Keep an eye on gutters. Gutters clogged with leaves and dirt prevent water from flowing through, which often means water will dump down in buckets around your house and potentially filter into the foundation of your home.

Divert rainwater away from the house. Make sure your gutters have downspouts that direct water away from the house; if your yard slopes toward your house, take measures to correct this.

Install a sump pump. Sump pumps remove any water that accumulates in your basement. Talk to your plumbing professional about the best kind for your basement.

Install a backup power source. Of course, a sump pump is no use to you without power, so make sure it’s connected to a generator should you lose electricity during a storm.
